Mariah Carey is mourning the loss of two close family members. The celebrated singer announced in a statement to ABC News that her mother passed away over the weekend and, tragically, her sister Alison also lost her life on the same day.
“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister [Alison] lost her life on the same day,” Carey expressed. She added that she cherished the time spent with her mother in her final week, and she requested respect for her privacy during this challenging time.
Details regarding the circumstances surrounding their deaths were not disclosed.
Patricia, Mariah’s mother, was an accomplished opera singer and vocal coach. She divorced Mariah’s father, Alfred Carey, when Mariah was just three years old. In her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, Mariah dedicated a section to her mother, stating, “And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”
Mariah’s relationship with her sister Alison has been tumultuous. In 2021, Alison filed a lawsuit against Mariah for “public humiliation” after the singer revealed in her memoir that her sister had subjected her to various abuses, including drugging her.
