MusiCares, an organization committed to supporting music professionals in need, has announced that Mariah Carey will be honored as the 2026 Person of the Year. The decision recognizes her extensive contributions to various underserved communities, which include relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina and the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as her initiative, Camp Mariah, aimed at uplifting youth through health, education, and social welfare programs.
Carey will receive this prestigious honor at the 35th annual Person of the Year benefit gala, which will take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center on January 30, just two nights before the Grammy Awards. This announcement comes shortly after the release of her first studio album in seven years, “Here for It All,” which debuted last month. Reflecting on her creative process, Carey expressed that songwriting has always been her outlet for self-expression during challenging times.
MusiCares’ executive director, Theresa Wolters, highlighted that Carey’s impact transcends her musical talents, stating that her work embodies the core values of MusiCares—creating frameworks of support that empower individuals within the music community and beyond. Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy and MusiCares, praised Carey as a “true creative force” whose artistry has significantly shaped music.
Carey’s upcoming recognition continues a tradition of honoring artists who have made a substantial charitable impact; last year, the Grateful Dead received the same honor for their philanthropic efforts, while Jon Bon Jovi was honored the year prior. This consistent acknowledgment of artists showcases a vibrant community committed to using their platforms for positive social change.
As music continues to evolve, honors like these reflect the ongoing dedication to uplifting both artists and the communities they serve, inspiring hope and resilience within the music industry.
