Tim Burton may be gearing up for an intriguing new animated film, but attention is currently focused on the progress of “Attack of the 50 Foot Woman” at Warner Bros. Recent reports indicate that Margot Robbie is set to star and produce this reimagined adaptation. Originally penned by “Gone Girl” writer Gillian Flynn, the script is now undergoing revisions by Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan, the minds behind “KPop Demon Hunters.”
In this modern take, Robbie will portray the titular character, a wealthy heiress who, following an encounter with an alien spacecraft, transforms into a formidable giantess. The character, initially portrayed by Allison Hayes in the 1958 version, embodies themes of empowerment and vengeance after facing abuse from a man. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Jimenez and McMechan expressed their enthusiasm for the story’s premise, saying, “We’re obsessed with the idea of a fifty-foot woman wreaking havoc because a man did her dirty. We have a feeling a lot of people will relate.”
At just 24, Jimenez and McMechan have already made significant strides in their careers, with projects like “A Really Bad Person,” a queer western, and past contributions to a ‘Lord Farquaad’ feature for DreamWorks Animation, alongside a biopic on Cheech & Chong. While Flynn’s original draft laid the groundwork for the project, the search for a new writer to refine the script is ongoing, as Flynn is currently tied up with other commitments.
Warner Bros. is keen to collaborate with Robbie, especially following her success with “Barbie,” making this project all the more promising. As the studio continues to develop “Attack of the 50 Foot Woman,” there is excitement surrounding the potential for Burton to deliver a fresh and captivating narrative, especially as it represents a tonal shift from his recent works such as “Dumbo” and “Wednesday.”
With the project progressing and the creative team in place, “Attack of the 50 Foot Woman” is shaping up to be an engaging exploration of empowerment through a fantastical lens, making it one of Burton’s most anticipated studio projects in years.
