Enzo Maresca, the Chelsea manager, recently shared insights into the development of young striker Marc Guiu, particularly regarding his training performance. Earlier this month, during a meeting before the Liverpool match on October 4, Guiu sought clarity on his lack of playing time. Maresca candidly informed the 19-year-old center-forward that his training efforts were insufficient for on-field selection.
Guiu, who had been recalled from a season-long loan at Sunderland due to injuries in the Chelsea squad, found himself on the sidelines for six games without an appearance. Maresca explained that his decision was based on Guiu’s performance in training sessions, stating, “I told him that the way he was training I didn’t like and he needed to change.” He emphasized that young players often require tailored guidance to flourish.
Since their conversation, Guiu has made significant improvements, culminating in three consecutive appearances for Chelsea, including a goal in a recent 5-1 victory against Ajax. Maresca praised Guiu’s turnaround, saying, “Since we chat, it (the training) has been top, fantastic. He is working very good. Is he ready to start against Sunderland? Absolutely yes.”
In addition to Guiu’s developments, the manager provided an update on Liam Delap, who is poised to return earlier than anticipated from injury. Initially expected to be sidelined until November, Delap participated in training for the first time on Thursday, and Maresca noted that he could be available for the Carabao Cup match against Wolves next week.
This positive turnaround for both Guiu and Delap reflects the club’s commitment to nurturing young talent and adapting to injury challenges within the squad, fostering an environment conducive to player growth and team success.
