Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has built a reputation for thriving in high-pressure environments. By the age of 24, he became the executive chef at Aquavit in New York City, making history as the youngest chef to earn a three-star review from the New York Times shortly after.

Over the years, Samuelsson has established himself as a key figure in New York’s culinary scene, launching various restaurants, including Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. He has also authored cookbooks and memoirs while frequently appearing on the Food Network.

Now, as a husband and father, Samuelsson is venturing into a new domain. He is set to launch a 32-piece home goods collection in partnership with West Elm, drawing inspiration from his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage, along with influences from his life in New York City.

In a recent interview with Quartz, Samuelsson reflected on the transformation of dining habits post-COVID-19 lockdowns, sharing insights on how people’s relationships with restaurants have evolved. He noted that while dining at home has improved considerably, diners now seek memorable experiences when they eat out, looking for exceptional service and vibrant atmospheres that connect them with others.

Speaking about the charm of his restaurant Red Rooster, Samuelsson emphasized the importance of creating an authentic Harlem experience, enriched by live music and a sense of community. He explained his commitment to featuring local musicians and making meaningful contributions to surrounding neighborhoods.

Regarding his new collaboration with West Elm, Samuelsson conveyed that his artistic pursuits extend beyond cooking, highlighting his long-standing passion for painting and writing. He enjoyed the creative partnership and collaboration process while developing the home goods collection, which incorporates elements from his father’s Swedish fishing village and African designs.

Despite diversifying his creative outlets, Samuelsson affirmed that cooking remains his primary passion and where he feels most confident, always returning to the kitchen after a long day.
