Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson is known for his demanding lifestyle and impressive accomplishments. By the age of 24, Samuelsson had already made a name for himself as the executive chef at New York City’s Aquavit and became the youngest chef to earn a three-star review from the New York Times shortly after.
Over the years, he has established himself as a prominent restaurateur in New York, opening notable establishments such as Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. Samuelsson has also published cookbooks and memoirs and has been a familiar face on the Food Network.
Now, as a husband and father, he is venturing into a new field by collaborating with West Elm to launch a 32-piece home goods collection inspired by his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage, as well as his New York City experiences.
In a recent interview with Quartz, Samuelsson shared insights about the evolution of dining out since the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted that the pandemic improved home cooking experiences, leading consumers to seek more from their dining experiences—specifically, enhanced service and an engaging atmosphere. Diners are now looking for a sense of belonging and connection in restaurants.
Samuelsson discussed the unique ambiance of Red Rooster in Harlem, highlighting the importance of community and live music. He takes pride in supporting local musicians, indicating that the restaurant experience goes beyond food.
When talking about his venture into home goods, he explained that his creativity extends beyond cooking to include painting and writing. He enjoys collaborating with West Elm, appreciating their openness to his ideas. The collection draws inspiration from his father’s fishing village in Sweden, as well as African influences, showcasing a blend of cultures in one cohesive line.
Despite his various creative pursuits, Samuelsson revealed that cooking remains his primary passion. He finds joy in all facets of the culinary world, from shopping for ingredients to sharing the love of food with his family.
