Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has long thrived in the high-pressure culinary world. By the age of 24, the Ethiopian-born, Swedish-raised chef had achieved the position of executive chef at New York City’s Aquavit and became the youngest recipient of a three-star review from the New York Times shortly afterward.

Over the years, Samuelsson has established himself as a leading restaurateur in New York, launching notable venues such as Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. He is also an accomplished author of cookbooks and memoirs and a familiar face on the Food Network.

Recently, Samuelsson is entering a new field, partnering with West Elm to unveil a 32-piece home goods collection influenced by his Scandinavian and Ethiopian heritage, as well as his New York City lifestyle.

In a recent interview with Quartz, Samuelsson reflected on the evolution of dining experiences post-COVID-19, emphasizing a heightened desire for exceptional service and a vibrant atmosphere when dining out. He noted that the pandemic has fostered a new generation of home cooks, leading diners to seek more from their restaurant experiences, including the feeling of being part of a community.

Samuelsson also discussed the importance of ambiance in his restaurants, with Red Rooster exemplifying the spirit of Harlem through live music and community engagement. He highlighted his commitment to supporting local musicians and ensuring that his establishments contribute meaningfully to the neighborhoods in which they operate.

When asked about his new collaboration with West Elm, Samuelsson expressed that his creativity extends beyond cooking. He described how his artistic pursuits, including painting and writing, have always been integral to his identity. The collaboration with West Elm felt particularly fulfilling, as it allowed him to blend inspiration from his father’s fishing village in Sweden with African prints, creating a cohesive collection.

Ultimately, despite his multiple creative endeavors, Samuelsson shared that he finds solace and clarity in cooking, affirming its significance in his life as an unwavering passion amidst his other pursuits.
