Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has navigated a high-pressure life in the culinary world since becoming the executive chef of New York City’s Aquavit at just 24 years old, gaining recognition as the youngest recipient of a three-star review from the New York Times shortly thereafter.
In the years since, Samuelsson has established himself as a leading restaurateur in New York, launching venues such as Red Rooster in 2010 and more recently, Hav & Mar in 2022 and Metropolis in 2023. He is also known for his cookbooks, memoirs, and appearances on the Food Network.
Now, Samuelsson is venturing into a new field by teaming up with West Elm to launch a 32-piece home goods collection that reflects his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage as well as his experiences in New York City.
In an interview with Quartz, Samuelsson shared insights about the evolving landscape of the dining experience in 2024, his creative inspirations, and his career trajectory.
He noted that since the pandemic, the dining experience has changed, with consumers seeking memorable outings that offer not just food but also a sense of community and exceptional service. “People want to feel like they are part of something special,” he remarked, as advancements in food delivery have provided more culinary options than ever.
When discussing the atmosphere at his Harlem restaurant, Red Rooster, Samuelsson emphasized the importance of community, live music, and a vibrant ambiance. He takes pride in supporting local musicians and integrating community elements into his restaurants, like the art program at Hav & Mar, which reflects Chelsea’s artistic vibe.
Samuelsson also spoke about the inspiration behind his new home goods collection, revealing that creative expression has always been a significant part of his life, from cooking to painting. He values the collaboration with West Elm and appreciated their willingness to incorporate his ideas.
Proudly, he highlighted the collection’s inspiration drawn from his father’s fishing village in Sweden combined with elements from Africa, creating a cohesive design aesthetic.
Despite his many creative endeavors, Samuelsson expressed that cooking remains his true passion and the activity he returns to at the end of a long day, emphasizing its central role in his life and identity.
