Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has established himself as a prominent figure in the culinary world, having achieved remarkable milestones early in his career. By the age of 24, he became the executive chef at New York City’s Aquavit and was recognized as the youngest chef to earn a three-star review from the New York Times.

Over the years, Samuelsson has gained recognition as one of New York’s leading restaurateurs, launching several notable establishments including Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. In addition to his restaurant ventures, he has authored cookbooks and memoirs, and has been a familiar face on the Food Network.

Currently, Samuelsson is venturing into a new arena by collaborating with West Elm to launch a 32-piece home goods collection inspired by his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage, along with his experiences living in New York City.

In a recent interview, Samuelsson discussed the evolution of dining out in the post-pandemic era, sharing insights about people’s changing perspectives towards restaurant experiences. He noted that the pandemic fostered a new generation of skilled home cooks, leading diners to seek elevated experiences in restaurants, including exceptional service and ambiance. He emphasized the importance of feeling part of a community when dining out.

Samuelsson also highlighted the significance of atmosphere in his restaurants, such as the live music at Red Rooster in Harlem, which contributes to the vibrant community culture. He pointed out that each restaurant he develops must connect with its local community and support local artists, reflecting the spirit of the neighborhood.

As for the home goods collection, Samuelsson expressed that his creative pursuits extend beyond the kitchen. He acknowledged a longstanding passion for painting and writing, which he integrates into his culinary work and restaurant design. His collaboration with West Elm was particularly rewarding due to the synergy between their established brand and his artistic vision.

Samuelsson takes pride in the collection, pointing out that many designs are influenced by memories from his father’s fishing village in Sweden, while also incorporating African elements, creating a cohesive and unique collection.
