Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has built a remarkable career, starting as the executive chef of New York City’s renowned Aquavit by age 24, and subsequently becoming the youngest recipient of a three-star review from The New York Times. Over the years, he has established himself as a leading restaurateur in New York, launching notable establishments such as Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. Samuelsson is also an accomplished author and a familiar face on the Food Network.

Recently, Samuelsson has ventured into a new arena by collaborating with West Elm to launch a 32-piece home goods collection that reflects his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage, as well as his experiences in New York City.

In an interview with Quartz, Samuelsson discussed the transformation of dining habits following the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted that the pandemic has enhanced the at-home dining experience, encouraging many to become proficient home cooks, which in turn has raised expectations for dining out. People seek not just food but also a vibrant atmosphere that fosters connections with others.

Samuelsson emphasized the importance of ambiance in his restaurants, particularly highlighting the community spirit found in Harlem at Red Rooster. He stated that the incorporation of live music enriches the dining experience, making patrons feel connected and engaged with the community.

When asked about moving into home goods design, Samuelsson explained that creativity is at the core of his pursuits. He has been passionate about painting and writing for many years, and he sees parallels between culinary design and interior design. His collaboration with West Elm allowed him to incorporate influences from his father’s fishing village in Sweden and African art, resulting in a cohesive collection.

Ultimately, Samuelsson noted that at the end of a busy day, he always returns to cooking, as it remains his primary passion and expertise, contrasting it with his ongoing learning in other creative fields.
