Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson, known for his high-pressure lifestyle, rose to prominence at a young age, becoming the executive chef of New York City’s Aquavit by 24 and receiving a three-star review from the New York Times, making him the youngest to achieve that honor.
Over the years, Samuelsson has established himself as a leading restaurateur in New York, opening notable establishments such as Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. He has also authored several cookbooks and memoirs and remains a well-known figure on the Food Network.
In a new venture, Samuelsson is collaborating with West Elm to launch a 32-piece home goods collection that draws inspiration from his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage, as well as his experiences in New York City.
In a recent interview with Quartz, Samuelsson discussed the evolving dining landscape post-COVID-19. He noted that the pandemic improved home dining experiences, leading people to seek exceptional service and unique dining atmospheres when they go out. Diners now desire a sense of community and connection, along with the convenience of diverse food options.
Samuelsson highlighted that ambiance is a crucial part of his restaurants, particularly at Red Rooster, where live music enhances the dining experience. He emphasized the importance of reflecting the community’s vibrancy and contributing to it through collaboration, such as with local artists at Hav & Mar.
When asked about his new home goods collection, Samuelsson explained that his creativity extends beyond culinary arts. He has been painting since his late teens and takes pride in the collaborative process, particularly with West Elm, which allowed him to merge his varied influences into a cohesive collection.
Samuelsson expressed pride in the natural elements included in the collection, which are inspired by his father’s fishing village in Sweden, along with African prints. Despite his many creative pursuits, he ultimately finds solace in cooking, which remains a constant passion and comfort for him.
