Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson, known for his high-pressure lifestyle, became the youngest executive chef of New York City’s Aquavit by the age of 24 and received a prestigious three-star review from the New York Times shortly after. Over the years, he has established himself as a leading restaurateur in New York, launching notable establishments such as Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. In addition to his culinary achievements, Samuelsson has authored cookbooks and memoirs and has been a regular on the Food Network.

In a new venture, Samuelsson is collaborating with West Elm to launch a 32-piece home goods collection inspired by his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage, alongside his life in New York City.

In a recent interview with Quartz, Samuelsson reflected on how people’s dining experiences have evolved since the pandemic. He noted that while home cooking has improved significantly, dining out has become more about the experience, service, and a sense of community.

Samuelsson emphasized the importance of ambiance in his restaurants, particularly at Red Rooster in Harlem, where live music enhances the dining experience. He aims to reflect the essence of Harlem while also supporting local musicians. At his Chelsea location, Hav & Mar, he integrates local art into the dining experience.

Discussing his new home goods collection, Samuelsson explained that his creative journey has always involved collaboration, whether in the kitchen or designing spaces. He found a rewarding partnership with West Elm, combining elements from his father’s fishing village in Sweden with African-inspired prints.

Despite his diverse creative pursuits, cooking remains his primary passion. Samuelsson stated that at the end of a long day, he always returns to the kitchen, feeling confident and assured in his culinary skills, unlike his explorations in writing, painting, and design, where he still feels like a novice.
