Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson is known for his dynamic and high-pressure lifestyle. By the age of 24, he had already become the executive chef of Aquavit in New York City and made headlines as the youngest recipient of a three-star review from the New York Times.
In the years since, Samuelsson has established himself as a prominent figure in New York’s culinary scene, launching notable restaurants such as Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023, among others. In addition to his culinary ventures, he has authored cookbooks, penned memoirs, and been a regular presence on the Food Network.
Recently, Samuelsson is venturing into a new area by collaborating with West Elm to launch a 32-piece home goods collection inspired by his Ethiopian and Scandinavian roots, along with his experiences in New York City.
In a recent interview, Samuelsson discussed how the restaurant industry has evolved in the post-COVID-19 era, emphasizing a shift in customers’ priorities. He noted that while people have become better home cooks during the pandemic, they now seek unique dining experiences that provide both great service and a lively atmosphere.
Samuelsson emphasized the importance of community in his restaurants, particularly at Red Rooster in Harlem, where live music is an integral part of the experience. He is committed to supporting local musicians and ensuring that his restaurants contribute positively to their neighborhoods.
When asked about his new project with West Elm, Samuelsson shared that his creative journey spans beyond cooking, including painting and writing. He enjoys the collaborative process in designing restaurants and found a fruitful partnership with West Elm, where he merged inspirations from his father’s fishing village in Sweden with African influences to create a cohesive collection.
Despite his diverse creative pursuits, Samuelsson always finds his way back to cooking, expressing a deep connection to the culinary arts that remains constant in his life.
