Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has faced high-pressure situations throughout his career, becoming the executive chef of New York City’s Aquavit by the age of 24, and earning the title of the youngest chef to receive a three-star review from the New York Times shortly thereafter.
Over the years, Samuelsson has established himself as a leading restaurateur in New York, opening notable establishments such as Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. He is also an accomplished author and a familiar face on the Food Network.
Now, Samuelsson is venturing into a new realm: a 32-piece home goods collection in collaboration with West Elm. This collection is designed to reflect his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage, along with his experiences in New York City.
In an interview with Quartz, Samuelsson reflected on how the dining landscape has evolved post-COVID-19. He noted that with improved options for home dining, customers are seeking more from their restaurant experiences, including quality service and an engaging atmosphere.
He emphasized the importance of ambiance in his restaurants, particularly at Red Rooster, which showcases the vibrant community of Harlem through live music and local engagement. Similarly, his Chelsea restaurant, Hav & Mar, integrates its surroundings by collaborating with local artists.
Discussing his transition to designing home goods, Samuelsson revealed that his creative passions extend beyond cooking, having painted and written for years. He approached the collaboration with West Elm as a meaningful partnership that allowed for creative expression, drawing inspiration from his upbringing and diverse cultural influences.
Despite his many ventures, Samuelsson affirmed that cooking remains his true passion, highlighting that he approaches it with confidence, unlike his other artistic pursuits where he feels he is still learning.
