Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson is familiar with a demanding lifestyle. By age 24, he became the executive chef at Aquavit in New York City, and shortly after, he made history as the youngest chef to earn a three-star review from the New York Times.
Throughout the years, Samuelsson has established himself as a leading restaurateur, opening notable establishments such as Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. He has authored several cookbooks and memoirs and has been a familiar face on the Food Network for many years.
Currently, Samuelsson is venturing into a new industry by collaborating with West Elm to launch a 32-piece home goods collection inspired by his Scandinavian and Ethiopian heritage, as well as his life in New York City.
In a recent interview with Quartz, Samuelsson discussed how people’s dining habits have evolved after the COVID-19 pandemic, his inspirations for cooking, and the future of his career.
Samuelsson noted that during the pandemic, people enhanced their home cooking skills, leading to a greater appreciation for dining out experiences that offer exceptional service and ambiance. He emphasized that diners today seek not just a meal, but a sense of community and connection when they eat out.
Regarding his restaurants, Samuelsson highlighted the importance of presenting the unique culture of Harlem at Red Rooster, which includes live music that enriches the dining experience. He also pointed out his commitment to paying musicians from the local community. At Hav & Mar in Chelsea, he aims to integrate the artistic spirit of the neighborhood through collaborations with local artists.
When asked about the inspiration for his home goods collection, Samuelsson expressed that his creative journey extends beyond cooking. He has been involved in painting and writing for many years. The collaboration with West Elm was characterized by mutual respect and openness, allowing him to blend designs that reflect both his Swedish roots and African heritage.
Samuelsson revealed that despite his various creative pursuits, cooking remains his passion and the activity he returns to after a long day, whether it involves market shopping, teaching his children about food, or simply dreaming of culinary creations.
