Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has carved out a prominent place for himself in the culinary world, rising to the position of executive chef at New York City’s Aquavit by the age of 24 and becoming the youngest recipient of a three-star review from the New York Times shortly thereafter.

Over the years, Samuelsson has established himself as one of New York’s leading restaurateurs, opening several popular venues including Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. He is also a renowned cookbook author and a familiar face on the Food Network.

Now, Samuelsson is venturing into a new realm by teaming up with West Elm to launch a 32-piece home goods collection. This collection draws inspiration from his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage, as well as his experiences in New York City.

In a recent interview with Quartz, Samuelsson discussed the evolution of dining out since the COVID-19 pandemic, noting that the lockdowns had significantly improved home cooking. He emphasized that diners are now seeking elevated experiences when eating out, desiring both exceptional service and a lively atmosphere.

Samuelsson highlighted the vibrant ambiance at Red Rooster, particularly the incorporation of live music that reflects the Harlem community. He stressed the importance of connecting with local culture and contributing positively to the neighborhood when opening new restaurants.

When asked about his new collaboration with West Elm, Samuelsson shared that his creative journey has always included painting and writing alongside his culinary pursuits. He expressed excitement about collaborating with West Elm, appreciating their openness to his ideas and the blending of influences from his father’s fishing village in Sweden and African prints into the home goods collection.

Ultimately, when reflecting on his passions, Samuelsson concluded that cooking remains his foremost love, stating that he experiences a deep clarity in that craft, unlike his other artistic endeavors.
