Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson is accustomed to a demanding lifestyle. By age 24, he had already achieved the position of executive chef at New York City’s Aquavit and shortly thereafter became the youngest chef to earn a three-star review from the New York Times.

Over the years, he has established himself as one of the leading restaurateurs in New York, launching notable establishments like Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. Samuelsson is also a published author of several cookbooks and memoirs and has been a regular presence on the Food Network.

Now, Samuelsson is venturing into a new arena by partnering with West Elm to launch a 32-piece home goods collection that reflects his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage as well as his experiences in New York City.

In a recent interview, Samuelsson shared his insights on the evolution of dining out since the COVID-19 lockdowns, stating that the pandemic has enhanced home cooking experiences, leading diners to seek improved service and unique atmospheres when they choose to eat out. He emphasized the importance of creating a sense of community and atmosphere in his restaurants, such as the live music at Red Rooster, which fosters a connection between patrons and their surroundings.

The chef also discussed his new collaboration with West Elm, revealing that his artistic pursuits extend beyond culinary arts to include painting and design. He described the partnership as a rewarding experience that allowed for creative collaboration. Samuelsson drew inspiration for the home goods collection from his Swedish roots, incorporating elements that echo the aesthetics of his father’s fishing village alongside prints that celebrate African culture.

Despite his many creative endeavors, Samuelsson stated that cooking remains his primary passion. He continues to find joy in all aspects of the culinary world, from shopping for ingredients to sharing meals with his family.
