Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has proven to be adept at managing a demanding lifestyle. At just 24, the Ethiopian-born and Swedish-raised chef became the executive chef at New York City’s Aquavit, subsequently earning the distinction of being the youngest recipient of a three-star review from the New York Times.
In the years that followed, he established himself as a prominent figure in New York’s culinary scene, launching eateries like Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. Samuelsson is also known for his cookbooks, memoirs, and appearances on the Food Network.
Now, he is venturing into a new field. In partnership with West Elm, Samuelsson is set to release a 32-piece home goods collection that reflects his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage, along with his New York City experiences.
In an interview with Quartz, Samuelsson discussed how dining habits have evolved post-COVID-19, emphasizing that consumers now seek enhanced dining experiences, valuing service and a sense of community. He noted that diners have become more sophisticated at home, leading to increased expectations when they choose to eat out.
Regarding the vibrant atmosphere at Red Rooster, he highlighted the importance of integrating local culture, including live music, which he believes enhances the dining experience. Samuelsson is committed to contributing positively to the neighborhoods in which he opens restaurants.
On his collaboration with West Elm, he expressed pride in blending various cultural influences into a cohesive collection, drawing inspiration from his father’s fishing village in Sweden and African motifs. Despite his diverse creative pursuits, Samuelsson admitted that cooking remains his true passion and the activity that grounds him, emphasizing his clarity and confidence in the culinary realm.
