Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson is known for his demanding lifestyle and remarkable achievements in the culinary world. By 24, he had become the executive chef of New York City’s Aquavit, making history as the youngest recipient of a three-star review from the New York Times shortly thereafter.

Over the years, Samuelsson has established his reputation as one of New York’s leading restaurateurs, launching notable establishments such as Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. He is also a successful author of cookbooks and memoirs and has been a familiar face on the Food Network.

Samuelsson is now venturing into a new domain by collaborating with West Elm to unveil a 32-piece home goods collection inspired by his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage, as well as his experiences living in New York City.

In a recent interview, Samuelsson discussed the shift in diners’ habits following the COVID-19 lockdowns. He noted that while home cooking has improved significantly during the pandemic, restaurant-goers now seek enhanced dining experiences that offer exceptional service and a sense of community. He emphasized that people want to feel engaged and part of something larger when dining out.

He highlighted the ambiance of his Harlem restaurant, Red Rooster, particularly its live music, which reflects the vibrant community of Harlem. Samuelsson takes pride in supporting local musicians and ensuring that his restaurants contribute positively to their neighborhoods.

Regarding his collaboration with West Elm, Samuelsson revealed that he has always been a creative individual, with interests in painting and writing alongside his culinary work. He enjoyed the collaborative process with West Elm, appreciating the established brand’s openness to his ideas.

Samuelsson expressed pride in his collection’s design, which combines elements from his father’s Swedish fishing village and prints from Africa, creating a harmonious blend of cultures within a single collection.

Despite his diverse pursuits, Samuelsson consistently returns to cooking at the end of a stressful day, finding peace in the entire process, from shopping at the market to sharing meals with his family. He feels confident in his culinary skills, viewing them as a solid foundation compared to his other creative endeavors.
