Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson is well-acquainted with the demands of a high-pressure lifestyle. Now, as a husband and father, Samuelsson is venturing into a new field: he is collaborating with West Elm to introduce a 32-piece collection of home goods inspired by his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage, alongside his life experiences in New York City.

Reflecting on the changes in people’s dining habits post-COVID-19, Samuelsson noted that home cooking has significantly improved, leading diners to desire exceptional service and unique experiences when they eat out. He emphasized that people now seek not just food, but an atmosphere where they feel connected and part of a community.

Discussing the ambiance of Red Rooster in Harlem, Samuelsson highlighted the importance of fostering community through live music and providing opportunities for local musicians. He also stressed the significance of engaging with and contributing to the unique character of each neighborhood where his restaurants are located.

When asked about the inspiration behind his new home goods collection for West Elm, Samuelsson explained that creativity is central to his identity. He has engaged with various forms of art throughout his life, including painting and writing, which he integrates into his culinary work. This collection, in particular, reflects his cultural roots and features design elements drawn from his father’s fishing village in Sweden, along with African prints, creating a cohesive collection.
