Marcus Samuelsson’s Culinary Journey Takes a Creative Turn with New Home Goods Collection

Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson, renowned for his high-pressure culinary career, has achieved significant accolades by the age of 24, including becoming the executive chef of New York City’s Aquavit and being the youngest recipient of a three-star review from the New York Times. Over the years, he has established himself as a top restaurateur, launching popular eateries such as Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. In addition to his culinary endeavors, Samuelsson is a prolific author of cookbooks and memoirs and has been a familiar face on the Food Network.

Now, Samuelsson is venturing into a new field by teaming up with West Elm to create a 32-piece home goods collection that draws inspiration from his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage, as well as his life in New York City.

In an interview with Quartz, Samuelsson shared insights about the evolution of dining experiences since the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted that while home cooking has improved, diners have shifted their expectations, seeking enhanced service and atmosphere when they eat out. Samuelsson emphasized the importance of feeling connected to others in the dining space and highlighted the ongoing expansion of food options available to consumers.

Discussing the ambiance of his restaurant Red Rooster, Samuelsson expressed how the Harlem community influences the venue, particularly through the incorporation of live music. He takes pride in supporting local musicians and ensuring his restaurants contribute positively to their neighborhoods.

When asked about the inspiration behind his collaboration with West Elm, Samuelsson likened the design process to his experiences as a chef, citing his long-standing passion for creativity in various forms, including painting and writing. He expressed his satisfaction with the collaborative effort, appreciating West Elm’s openness to his ideas.

Samuelsson shared his pride in the collection, showcasing elements inspired by his father’s fishing village in Sweden alongside African prints, uniting diverse cultural influences within a single collection.

Despite his numerous creative pursuits, Samuelsson stated that cooking remains his ultimate passion, whether it’s sourcing ingredients, teaching his children, or simply thinking about food, highlighting his confidence and clarity in the culinary realm.
