Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson is accustomed to a high-pressure lifestyle. By the age of 24, the Ethiopian-born and Swedish-raised chef had already achieved the position of executive chef at Aquavit in New York City, soon making headlines as the youngest recipient of a three-star review from the New York Times.

Over the years, Samuelsson has established himself as a prominent restaurateur, opening notable establishments like Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. He has also authored numerous cookbooks, written memoirs, and been a familiar face on the Food Network for years.

Recently, Samuelsson is venturing into a new realm by launching a 32-piece home goods collection in collaboration with West Elm. This collection draws inspiration from his Scandinavian and Ethiopian heritage, as well as his experiences in New York City.

In an interview with Quartz, he discussed the evolving landscape of dining post-COVID-19, the ambiance of his restaurants, and his new collaborative venture. Reflecting on the pandemic’s impact on dining habits, Samuelsson noted that while home dining options have improved greatly, patrons now seek enhanced dining experiences that offer exceptional service and a sense of community.

Samuelsson emphasized the importance of atmosphere in his restaurants, highlighting that at Red Rooster, the vibrant Harlem community plays a significant role in shaping its identity. He also mentioned the value of live music in enriching the dining experience and creating a supportive environment for local musicians.

Discussing his new collection with West Elm, Samuelsson expressed pride in the collaboration and the integration of inspirations from his father’s fishing village in Sweden alongside African prints. He sees parallels between his culinary creativity and his artistic endeavors, whether it’s design or painting.

Despite his diverse interests, Samuelsson pointed out that, at the end of a long day, he always returns to cooking—a craft he feels confident in and deeply passionate about.
