Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has long thrived in the demanding world of cuisine. By the age of 24, he had secured the position of executive chef at Aquavit in New York City and soon after became the youngest recipient of a coveted three-star review from the New York Times.

Over the years, Samuelsson has established himself as a leading restaurateur in New York, launching popular spots like Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. He has authored several cookbooks and memoirs and has been a prominent figure on the Food Network.

Recently, Samuelsson is venturing into a new realm: a 32-piece home goods collection in collaboration with West Elm. This collection draws inspiration from his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage as well as his experiences in New York City.

In a recent interview with Quartz, Samuelsson reflected on changes in dining habits since the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted that home cooking has improved, leading diners to seek enhanced experiences when they go out. “Diners want to feel like they’re part of something special,” he said, emphasizing the desire for quality service and ambiance in restaurants.

Samuelsson highlighted the importance of community in his establishments. At Red Rooster, he integrates live music into the dining experience, contributing to the vibrant culture of Harlem while ensuring musicians are compensated for their work. He also considers the local context in his Chelsea restaurant, Hav & Mar, which features an art program in collaboration with local artists.

Discussing his transition to designing home goods, Samuelsson explained that his creativity extends beyond cooking; he has been involved in painting and writing for years. His collaboration with West Elm was rewarding, as it allowed him to merge his artistic vision with established craftsmanship.

He expressed pride in the collection’s elements, noting how they reflect his personal history—from the woods of his father’s fishing village in Sweden to prints inspired by Africa. However, regardless of his various creative pursuits, Samuelsson emphasized that cooking remains his true passion and expertise, where he feels most confident and fulfilled.
