Marcus Samuelsson’s Bold New Venture Blends Culture and Community

Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has become well-known for his high-pressure lifestyle and culinary achievements. By the age of 24, he had already earned the title of executive chef at Aquavit in New York City and became the youngest recipient of a three-star review from the New York Times.

Over the years, Samuelsson established himself as a leading restaurateur, launching venues such as Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. He is also recognized for his cookbooks, memoirs, and long-standing presence on the Food Network.

In a new venture, Samuelsson is collaborating with West Elm to introduce a collection of 32 home goods inspired by his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage, as well as his experiences in New York City.

In a recent interview, he discussed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dining out, stating that the quality of takeout improved, resulting in a new generation of skilled home cooks. When dining out, patrons now seek a higher level of service and atmosphere, desiring a sense of connection within the restaurant.

Samuelsson emphasized the importance of community in his establishments, particularly at Red Rooster, where live music plays a pivotal role in creating an inviting ambiance. He stressed the pride he takes in supporting local musicians and contributing to the community’s culture.

Reflecting on his new collaboration with West Elm, Samuelsson shared that his creativity in cooking has also extended to painting and writing over the years. He expressed excitement about the collaborative design process, which drew inspiration from his father’s fishing village in Sweden and African prints, resulting in a cohesive collection.

Despite his many talents, Samuelsson revealed that at the end of the day, cooking remains his true passion, where he feels most confident and clear in his direction.
