Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson, known for his high-pressure career, has made a name for himself in the culinary world. At just 24, he was appointed executive chef at New York City’s Aquavit, making history as the youngest recipient of a three-star review from the New York Times.

Over the years, he has established himself as a prominent restaurateur in New York, launching Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023, among other venues. Samuelsson has also authored cookbooks, memoirs, and remains a familiar face on the Food Network.

Now, the husband and father is venturing into a new domain. In collaboration with West Elm, he is set to launch a 32-piece home goods collection inspired by his Scandinavian and Ethiopian roots, along with his experiences in New York City.

In a recent interview with Quartz, Samuelsson reflected on the evolution of dining out post-COVID-19. He observed that the pandemic improved home dining experiences, resulting in a new generation of skilled home cooks. As diners return to restaurants, they now seek exceptional service and an immersive experience that goes beyond just food.

Samuelsson emphasized the importance of atmosphere when visiting or running restaurants. At Red Rooster, he incorporates the vibrant spirit of Harlem by featuring live music and supporting local musicians, while at Hav & Mar, he embraces the arts community in Chelsea with an art program.

When asked about his new collaboration with West Elm, Samuelsson stated that he views himself primarily as a creative individual. His culinary background has influenced his artistic endeavors, including painting and writing. He spoke highly of the collaborative effort with West Elm, where he combined elements from his father’s fishing village in Sweden and African prints to create a cohesive collection.

Despite his wide-ranging artistic pursuits, Samuelsson shared that cooking remains his true passion. He expresses joy in every aspect of the culinary experience, whether shopping for ingredients or sharing food with his family.
