Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has demonstrated a talent for thriving in high-pressure environments. By age 24, he had already become the executive chef of Aquavit in New York City, becoming the youngest recipient of a three-star review from the New York Times shortly thereafter.

Over the years, Samuelsson has established himself as a leading restaurateur in New York, launching notable venues such as Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. He has also authored several cookbooks and memoirs, becoming a familiar face on the Food Network.

In a new venture, Samuelsson is teaming up with West Elm to introduce a 32-piece home goods collection, inspired by his Ethiopian and Scandinavian roots as well as his experiences in New York City.

In a recent conversation with Quartz, Samuelsson discussed how diners’ relationships with restaurants have evolved since the pandemic and shared his thoughts on creating memorable dining experiences. He noted that the pandemic improved home dining options, resulting in a new generation of adept home cooks. Consequently, customers now seek out restaurants for quality service and an engaging atmosphere.

Samuelsson emphasized the importance of community in his restaurants, particularly highlighting the role of live music at Red Rooster, which not only enriches the dining experience but also supports local musicians. He believes that an understanding of the community is essential when establishing a new restaurant.

Reflecting on his new collaboration with West Elm, Samuelsson expressed that his creative background as a chef has always encompassed other artistic pursuits, including painting and writing. He relishes the design process, finding the partnership with West Elm particularly rewarding due to their openness to his creative vision.

As for what he cherishes most in this new endeavor, Samuelsson is proud of how the collection merges elements from his father’s fishing village in Sweden with African prints, resulting in a cohesive artistic expression.

When asked about his go-to activity after a demanding day, Samuelsson returned to his roots, stating that cooking remains his primary passion, whether he’s shopping for ingredients, sharing meals with his family, or simply contemplating culinary creations.
