Marcus Samuelsson’s Bold New Venture: A Culinary Journey into Home Design

Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson is known for navigating a demanding lifestyle. By the age of 24, he had already ascended to the role of executive chef at New York City’s Aquavit and made history as the youngest recipient of a three-star review from the New York Times.

Over the years, Samuelsson has established himself as a leading restaurateur in New York, launching venues like Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023, among others. He has authored cookbooks and memoirs, and has been a familiar face on the Food Network.

Now, Samuelsson is venturing into a new field: teaming up with West Elm to debut a 32-piece home goods collection inspired by his Scandinavian and Ethiopian heritage, as well as his experiences in New York City.

In a recent interview with Quartz, he discussed the evolution of dining out in 2024, his culinary inspirations, and what lies ahead in his career. The interview has been lightly edited for brevity and clarity.

When asked about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dining habits, Samuelsson noted that it enhanced people’s culinary skills at home, leading diners to seek elevated experiences when they eat out. He mentioned that patrons crave not just good food, but also memorable service and an atmosphere that fosters connection.

Samuelsson highlighted the importance of creating community through his restaurants. At Red Rooster, he focuses on celebrating Harlem’s vibrant culture, incorporating live music and supporting local musicians. For Hav & Mar in Chelsea, he emphasizes the local art scene through collaborations that reflect the neighborhood.

Regarding his collaboration with West Elm, Samuelsson expressed that his creativity extends beyond cooking. With a background in painting and a history of designing restaurant spaces, he found joy in collaborating with West Elm, appreciating their openness to his ideas and the creative process.

One of the aspects of the collection that Samuelsson is proud of is the blend of indigenous Swedish wood inspirations from his father’s fishing village with African elements. He aims for a harmonious integration of diverse influences within the collection.

Despite his many creative pursuits, Samuelsson revealed that cooking remains his primary passion. After a long day, he returns to the kitchen, whether it’s selecting ingredients at the market, explaining dishes to his children, or simply thinking about food, signifying his deep connection to the culinary world.
