Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has led a high-pressure lifestyle for years. By the age of 24, he had already become the executive chef of New York City’s Aquavit and was the youngest individual to win a three-star review from the New York Times.
In the years that followed, Samuelsson built his reputation as one of New York’s top restaurateurs, launching establishments like Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. He has also authored cookbooks and memoirs and has been a prominent figure on the Food Network.
Now, Samuelsson is venturing into a new industry by partnering with West Elm to launch a 32-piece home goods collection influenced by his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage, as well as his experiences living in New York City.
In a recent interview with Quartz, Samuelsson discussed the evolving dining landscape post-COVID-19, his inspirations in the culinary world, and his future endeavors. He noted that the pandemic resulted in a more refined home dining experience, which has heightened people’s expectations when eating out. Diners now seek not just a meal, but an immersive experience that includes ambiance and interaction with the community.
When asked about the factors that contribute to the unique atmosphere at Red Rooster, Samuelsson emphasized the importance of the Harlem community and the inclusion of live music, which enhances the dining experience while supporting local musicians.
Reflecting on his collaboration with West Elm, Samuelsson shared that his creative background extends beyond cooking, as he has been passionate about painting and writing for many years. He expressed pride in the collection, highlighting how it merges elements inspired by his father’s fishing village in Sweden with African prints.
Ultimately, regardless of his other creative pursuits, Samuelsson returns to his passion for cooking, finding clarity and fulfillment in the culinary arts.
