Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has built a reputation for thriving in high-pressure environments, achieving remarkable milestones at a young age. By just 24, he became the executive chef of New York City’s Aquavit and made history as the youngest chef to earn a three-star review from the New York Times.

Over the years, Samuelsson has established himself as a leading figure in the New York restaurant scene, opening well-known establishments such as Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. Besides his restaurant ventures, he has authored cookbooks and memoirs and maintained a strong presence on the Food Network.

In an exciting new venture, Samuelsson is collaborating with West Elm to launch a 32-piece home goods collection inspired by his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage, as well as his experiences in New York City.

In an interview with Quartz, Samuelsson reflected on the transformation of dining out in the post-COVID-19 era. He noted that the pandemic improved home dining experiences, leading to a new generation of skilled home cooks. As a result, dining out has become more about enjoying exceptional service and a vibrant atmosphere.

Samuelsson emphasized the importance of community in his restaurants, particularly at Red Rooster, where live music plays a key role in creating an inviting ambiance. He expressed pride in supporting local musicians and integrating community culture into his venues. For Hav & Mar in Chelsea, he aims to connect with the local art scene, collaborating with artist Derrick Adams to enhance the restaurant’s cultural footprint.

Regarding his partnership with West Elm, Samuelsson shared that his creative journey as a chef has always been intertwined with other artistic pursuits, such as painting and writing. He acknowledged the value of collaboration in designing his home goods collection, highlighting the influence of his father’s Swedish fishing village and African prints as central design elements.

Finally, despite his involvement in multiple creative fields, Samuelsson affirmed that cooking remains his true passion and focus. He feels confident and knowledgeable in the kitchen, viewing it as a space where he thrives without hesitation.
