Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson is accustomed to a high-pressure lifestyle. By the age of 24, the Ethiopian-born, Swedish-raised culinary innovator had already become the executive chef of New York City’s Aquavit, making history as the youngest chef to earn a three-star review from the New York Times.

Over the years, Samuelsson has established himself as one of New York’s prominent restaurateurs, launching acclaimed venues such as Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. He has authored several cookbooks and memoirs and has been a familiar face on the Food Network.

In a recent development, Samuelsson is venturing into a new industry. In collaboration with West Elm, he is set to unveil a 32-piece collection of home goods that draws from his Scandinavian and Ethiopian heritage as well as his experiences living in New York City.

In an interview with Quartz, Samuelsson shared insights about the evolving dining landscape in 2024, his creative inspirations, and his future career aspirations.

When reflecting on how the pandemic influenced dining habits, he noted that while people became more skilled at home cooking, their desire for an elevated dining experience has also grown. Consumers now seek out not only good food but also an atmosphere that enhances social interaction and community.

The ambiance at Red Rooster, particularly its live music elements, showcases Harlem’s vibrant culture. Samuelsson expressed pride in supporting local musicians and emphasized the importance of integrating community values within his restaurants. Similarly, for Hav & Mar in Chelsea, he prioritizes contributing meaningfully to the neighborhood’s artistic identity.

About his new partnership with West Elm, Samuelsson revealed that his design inspirations stem from his lifelong creativity. He has been engaged in art and writing for many years, and he views his restaurant design work as a collaborative process with architects, striving to reflect his Scandinavian aesthetic.

One element of the West Elm collaboration that he particularly cherishes is the incorporation of materials inspired by his father’s fishing village in Sweden, alongside prints that celebrate African culture, resulting in a cohesive collection.

Despite his various creative outlets, Samuelsson always returns to cooking as his ultimate passion, whether it involves shopping for ingredients, cooking for his children, or simply contemplating food. He feels confident in his culinary skills, recognizing it as the area in which he truly excels.
