Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has led a dynamic and high-pressure career, becoming the executive chef of New York City’s Aquavit by the age of 24. He gained recognition as the youngest chef to receive a three-star review from the New York Times. Over the years, Samuelsson has established himself as a key figure in the New York restaurant scene, having launched notable establishments like Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. Alongside his culinary ventures, he has authored cookbooks, written memoirs, and has been a consistent presence on the Food Network.

Recently, Samuelsson is venturing into a new arena by partnering with West Elm to produce a 32-piece home goods collection inspired by his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage, as well as his experiences in New York City.

In an interview with Quartz, he reflected on how the COVID-19 pandemic has altered dining experiences. He noted that the rise of home cooking has led diners to seek more from their restaurant outings, favoring exceptional service and unique atmospheres when they go out. He emphasized the importance of feeling part of a community when dining out.

Samuelsson discussed how the ambiance at his restaurant, Red Rooster, is influenced by Harlem’s vibrant community, which includes live music that enhances the dining experience. He takes great pride in employing local musicians and believes in contributing to the neighborhoods where his restaurants are located.

When asked about his collaboration with West Elm, he shared that his creative journey as a chef intersects with other artistic endeavors like painting and writing. He expressed the joy of teamwork with West Elm, appreciating their receptiveness to his design ideas, which incorporate elements from his father’s fishing village in Sweden and African prints.

Ultimately, Samuelsson revealed that after a long day, it is cooking that remains his primary passion. Whether it involves shopping for ingredients or teaching his children about food, cooking is where he feels most confident and engaged.
