Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson is known for thriving in high-pressure environments. By 24, the Ethiopian-born and Swedish-raised chef had already become executive chef at New York City’s Aquavit and made history as the youngest recipient of a three-star review from the New York Times.

Over the years, Samuelsson has established himself as a leading restaurateur in New York, launching eateries such as Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. He has also authored several cookbooks and memoirs while making frequent appearances on the Food Network.

Now, Samuelsson is venturing into a new market with a partnership with West Elm. He is set to unveil a 32-piece home goods collection inspired by his Scandinavian and Ethiopian heritage, as well as influences from his life in New York City.

In a recent interview, Samuelsson discussed the evolution of dining out in the wake of COVID-19, noting that the pandemic enhanced the quality of home cooking while simultaneously increasing diner expectations for restaurant experiences. He emphasized the importance of creating an inviting atmosphere where patrons feel a connection to the venue and community.

The ambiance of his restaurant, particularly Red Rooster, is a significant focus for Samuelsson, where live music plays a key role in enhancing the dining experience. He takes pride in supporting local musicians and believes in researching and respecting the communities around his establishments.

Regarding his new home goods collection with West Elm, Samuelsson shared that his creative journey as a chef also encompasses painting and writing, allowing him to approach design with a collaborative mindset. He expressed pride in incorporating elements from his father’s fishing village in Sweden and African prints into the collection, creating a harmonious blend of his diverse inspirations.

Ultimately, after a long day, cooking remains Samuelsson’s core passion. He finds joy in every aspect of it, from shopping for ingredients to sharing the culinary experience with his family, while he continues to see his other creative pursuits as works in progress.
