Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has had a remarkable journey in the culinary world, becoming executive chef of New York City’s Aquavit at just 24 years old. He soon became the youngest chef to earn a three-star review from the New York Times. Over the years, Samuelsson has established himself as a leading restaurateur, launching iconic venues such as Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023, while also authoring cookbooks and appearing frequently on the Food Network.
In a new venture, Samuelsson is set to enter the home goods market, collaborating with West Elm to introduce a 32-piece collection inspired by his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage, as well as his New York City lifestyle.
In a recent conversation with Quartz, Samuelsson reflected on changes in dining out since the pandemic, highlighting that many people have become better cooks at home. This shift has led diners to seek out unique experiences when they eat out, where they desire service and a sense of community.
When discussing his restaurant Red Rooster, Samuelsson emphasized the importance of Harlem’s vibrant community, noting the role of live music in enhancing the dining experience. He takes pride in supporting local musicians and ensuring that his restaurants contribute positively to their neighborhoods.
Samuelsson also addressed his decision to create a home goods line with West Elm, revealing that his creative endeavors, such as painting and writing, parallel his journey as a chef. He enjoyed the collaborative process in designing the collection, which reflects elements from his father’s fishing village in Sweden and African prints.
Despite his many creative projects, Samuelsson stated that cooking remains his passion and the foundation he continually returns to, whether it’s shopping for ingredients, sharing food with his family, or thinking about the culinary arts.
