Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson is known for his high-pressure career in the culinary world. By age 24, the Ethiopian-born, Swedish-raised chef had achieved the prestigious position of executive chef at Aquavit in New York City, becoming the youngest recipient of a three-star review from the New York Times shortly thereafter.
Over the years, Samuelsson has established himself as a leading restaurateur, opening several acclaimed establishments including Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023, among others. He has also authored cookbooks and memoirs and has been a familiar face on the Food Network.
Now, Samuelsson is branching out into a new sector. In collaboration with West Elm, he is launching a 32-piece home goods collection that draws inspiration from his Scandinavian and Ethiopian heritage, as well as his life in New York City.
In a recent interview with Quartz, Samuelsson discussed shifts in dining habits post-COVID-19, his culinary inspirations, and future plans for his career. He noted that the pandemic transformed people’s experiences with dining out, leading many to become better home cooks and to seek elevated experiences when they go out.
He emphasized the importance of community in his restaurants, particularly at Red Rooster in Harlem, where live music enhances the atmosphere and supports local musicians. Samuelsson also highlighted the significance of understanding a neighborhood’s culture before opening a restaurant.
When asked about his decision to create a home goods collection, Samuelsson expressed that his creativity extends beyond cooking. He has engaged in painting and writing for many years, and the design of his restaurants often incorporates personal aesthetic preferences, including Scandinavian influences.
Regarding his collaboration with West Elm, he expressed pride in blending elements from his father’s fishing village in Sweden with African prints to create a cohesive collection.
Despite his various creative pursuits, Samuelsson stated that he always returns to cooking as his main passion, whether it’s shopping for ingredients, cooking with his children, or simply contemplating food.
