Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has made significant strides in his career, starting as the executive chef of New York City’s Aquavit at the age of 24 and becoming the youngest chef to receive a three-star review from The New York Times. Over the years, he has cemented his reputation as a top restaurateur, launching popular eateries such as Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023, alongside authoring cookbooks and featuring prominently on the Food Network.
Now, Samuelsson is venturing into a new domain by collaborating with West Elm to create a 32-piece home goods collection inspired by his Ethiopian and Scandinavian backgrounds, as well as his experiences in New York City.
In a recent interview with Quartz, Samuelsson shared insights about the evolution of dining out since the COVID-19 lockdowns, noting that the pandemic improved home cooking skills, leading diners to seek out elevated dining experiences that provide memorable service and ambiance. He emphasized the importance of feeling a sense of community and connection when eating out, as patrons gravitate toward places that make them feel special and part of something larger.
Samuelsson also highlighted the vibrant atmosphere at Red Rooster, particularly the inclusion of live music, which he believes enhances the dining experience and supports local musicians. He expressed pride in ensuring that his restaurant aligns with and contributes to the communities they inhabit, mentioning the artistic initiatives at his Chelsea location, Hav & Mar.
Regarding his new collaboration with West Elm, Samuelsson explained that his creative pursuits extend beyond cooking to include painting and writing. He felt a strong resonance between the design process of the home goods collection and his work as a chef, with influences drawn from his father’s fishing village in Sweden and African culture.
Ultimately, despite his diverse creative endeavors, Samuelsson revealed that he always returns to cooking at the end of his day, asserting that it remains his true passion and calling.
