Now, as a husband and father, Samuelsson ventures into a new arena: a 32-piece home goods collection in collaboration with West Elm. This line draws inspiration from his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage, as well as his experiences living in New York City.
In an interview with Quartz, Samuelsson shared insights on the evolution of dining out since the COVID-19 pandemic, his culinary inspirations, and his future plans.
He noted that the pandemic transformed people’s dining habits, improving home cooking skills and raising expectations for restaurant experiences. Diners now seek an engaging atmosphere that goes beyond just the meal, desiring a sense of communal belonging.
Discussing his renowned restaurant Red Rooster, Samuelsson highlighted the importance of community and the role of live music, emphasizing that his establishment reflects the vibrant essence of Harlem. He is also committed to supporting local musicians and ensuring that his restaurants contribute positively to their neighborhoods.
As for his home goods collection with West Elm, Samuelsson sees a strong connection between his culinary and design inspirations, drawing on his creative background that includes painting and writing. He expressed pride in collaborating with West Elm, appreciating their openness to his ideas while combining influences from his Swedish heritage and African designs into a cohesive collection.
Despite his multifaceted career, Samuelsson revealed that cooking remains his true passion. He engages in cooking daily, whether shopping for ingredients or cooking with his children, feeling confident and accomplished in this aspect of his life.
