Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson is well known for his fast-paced lifestyle in the culinary world. By the age of 24, the Ethiopian-born, Swedish-raised chef had already taken the position of executive chef at Aquavit in New York City, making history as the youngest recipient of a three-star review from the New York Times shortly after.
In the years that followed, he solidified his reputation as a top restaurateur in New York, opening notable venues such as Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. Samuelsson has also authored several cookbooks and memoirs and has been a fixture on the Food Network.
Now, as a husband and father, Samuelsson is venturing into a new field. He is collaborating with West Elm to launch a 32-piece home goods collection inspired by his Scandinavian and Ethiopian heritage and his experiences in New York City.
In a recent interview with Quartz, Samuelsson discussed the evolving dining landscape in 2024, his creative inspirations, and his future plans. He reflected on how the pandemic transformed people’s dining habits, noting that while many have become skilled home cooks, they now seek memorable, service-oriented dining experiences when they go out.
Regarding his restaurants, Samuelsson emphasized the importance of community and ambiance. At Red Rooster, live music plays a crucial role in enhancing the dining experience, while at Hav & Mar, he aims to blend with the local Chelsea community by integrating art and culture into the restaurant’s offerings.
Samuelsson’s shift into designing a home goods collection was a natural progression of his creative journey. He highlighted that his artistic pursuits, including painting and writing, have always influenced his work as a chef and restaurateur. His partnership with West Elm involved a collaborative approach, allowing him to weave elements from both his Swedish heritage and African influences into the collection.
Ultimately, when reflecting on his daily life and work, Samuelsson noted that cooking remains his primary passion, providing him with clarity and purpose, while his other creative endeavors feel more like a learning experience.
