Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has built a high-octane career known for its rapid ascent and numerous accomplishments. By the age of 24, the Ethiopian-born and Swedish-raised chef had already been appointed executive chef of Aquavit in New York City, earning a historic three-star review from the New York Times shortly thereafter.

Over the years, Samuelsson has established himself as one of New York City’s leading restaurateurs, launching notable venues like Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. He is also a prolific author of cookbooks and memoirs and has maintained a longstanding presence on the Food Network.

Now, Samuelsson is venturing into a new arena by collaborating with West Elm to introduce a 32-piece collection of home goods. This line draws inspiration from his Scandinavian and Ethiopian heritage as well as his experiences living in New York City.

In an interview with Quartz, Samuelsson reflected on the changes in dining out since the COVID-19 lockdowns. He noted that the pandemic has transformed people’s expectations, as home cooking has significantly improved. Dining out now involves a desire for exceptional service and a memorable atmosphere. Guests seek to feel a sense of community and connection when eating out.

Samuelsson described the vibrant ambiance at Red Rooster, particularly highlighting the importance of live music and the role of community. He emphasized his pride in supporting local musicians and the myriad elements that contribute to the restaurant’s identity. At Hav & Mar, located in Chelsea, Samuelsson has developed programs that resonate with the local art scene, underscoring his commitment to engaging with the neighborhoods where his restaurants are located.

Discussing his foray into home goods design with West Elm, Samuelsson expressed that his creativity extends beyond the kitchen. He has enjoyed collaborations with architects throughout his career and found similar fulfillment in this partnership with West Elm. He took pride in infusing elements from his father’s fishing village in Sweden along with African prints into his home goods collection, blending cultural influences into a cohesive line.

Despite his pursuits in painting, writing, and now furniture design, Samuelsson remains firmly rooted in the culinary world. He revealed that after a long and stressful day, he always returns to cooking, finding comfort and clarity in the kitchen, where he feels most seasoned and confident.
