Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson is known for managing a high-pressure lifestyle. By the age of 24, the Ethiopian-born and Swedish-raised culinary talent had already become the executive chef of Aquavit in New York City. He quickly made history by being the youngest chef to receive a three-star review from The New York Times.

Over the years, Samuelsson has established himself as one of New York’s leading restaurateurs, opening several renowned dining establishments, including Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. He has also authored cookbooks and memoirs and has been a familiar face on the Food Network.

In a new venture, Samuelsson is making his mark in the home goods industry. In collaboration with West Elm, he is set to launch a 32-piece collection that draws inspiration from his Scandinavian and Ethiopian heritage, as well as his experiences in New York City.

Recently, Samuelsson shared his insights on the changing dining landscape with Quartz. Reflecting on how the pandemic has transformed people’s dining habits, he noted that while home cooking improved, diners now expect a heightened restaurant experience. They seek service and an engaging atmosphere that makes them feel part of a community.

At his restaurant, Red Rooster in Harlem, Samuelsson emphasizes the importance of ambiance, which includes live music. He believes it is essential to reflect the vibrancy of Harlem and highlight local musicians, thereby enhancing the dining experience while supporting the community.

Discussing his new home goods collection, Samuelsson revealed that his creative background encompasses more than just cooking; he has been an artist and writer for years. His collaboration with West Elm was particularly fulfilling, as it allowed him to blend his culinary inspirations with design, showcasing elements from his father’s fishing village in Sweden alongside African prints.

Despite his diverse interests, Samuelsson remains passionate about cooking. At the end of a long day, it is the kitchen that he returns to for solace, whether he is shopping for ingredients, cooking for his family, or contemplating new culinary creations.
