Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has long thrived in high-pressure environments. By the age of 24, he had taken on the role of executive chef at Aquavit in New York City and became the youngest chef ever to earn a three-star review from the New York Times.
Over the years, Samuelsson has established himself as a prominent restaurateur, launching notable establishments such as Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. He is also an accomplished author of cookbooks and memoirs, and has been a familiar face on the Food Network.
Recently, Samuelsson is venturing into a new field by partnering with West Elm to launch a 32-piece home goods collection that draws inspiration from his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage as well as his experiences in New York City.
In a recent interview with Quartz, Samuelsson discussed the evolution of dining out since the COVID-19 lockdowns, sharing that the pandemic has enhanced people’s appreciation for dining experiences that offer excellent service and a vibrant atmosphere. He noted that diners now desire a sense of community and connection when they go out to eat.
He emphasized the importance of ambiance in his restaurants, particularly Red Rooster, which features live music and reflects the cultural richness of Harlem. Samuelsson also takes pride in supporting local musicians, highlighting his commitment to the community.
When asked about his new home goods collection, Samuelsson expressed that his creative journey extends beyond cooking into painting and writing, emphasizing collaboration as a key aspect of his work with West Elm. He is particularly proud of incorporating elements from his father’s fishing village in Sweden and African influences into the collection.
Despite his diverse creative pursuits, Samuelsson revealed that cooking remains his primary passion. He continues to find joy in all aspects of cooking, whether it’s shopping for ingredients, sharing meals with his family, or reflecting on culinary ideas.
