Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson is making waves not just in the culinary world but also in interior design. By the age of 24, this Ethiopian-born, Swedish-raised chef had already achieved remarkable success, becoming the executive chef at Aquavit in New York City and making history as the youngest recipient of a three-star review from the New York Times.
Samuelsson has since established himself as a leading restaurateur in New York, with ventures including Red Rooster, which he opened in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. His influence extends beyond restaurants; he has authored several cookbooks and memoirs and is a familiar face on the Food Network.
Now, Samuelsson is venturing into a new domain by partnering with West Elm to launch a 32-piece home goods collection inspired by his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage, along with his life in New York.
In a recent interview with Quartz, Samuelsson reflected on the transformation of dining out since the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted that home cooking has significantly improved during this time, leading diners to seek enhanced service and a memorable experience when they eat out. He emphasized the desire for patrons to feel connected and engaged in the communal atmosphere of a restaurant.
Samuelsson also spoke about the importance of ambiance in his restaurants. At Red Rooster, he highlights the cultural significance of Harlem, incorporating live music that not only entertains guests but also supports local musicians. For his Chelsea-based restaurant Hav & Mar, he aims to connect with the local art scene, featuring an art program designed in collaboration with artist Derrick Adams.
When discussing his new home goods collection with West Elm, Samuelsson explained that his creative journey is deeply rooted in collaboration. He drew parallels between designing restaurants and creating home goods, as both require a harmonious blend of aesthetics and functionality. He expressed pride in incorporating elements from his father’s fishing village in Sweden as well as prints inspired by African art, creating a cohesive collection that reflects his diverse influences.
Despite his myriad creative pursuits, cooking remains Samuelsson’s true passion. He finds solace in the culinary process, whether it’s shopping for ingredients, sharing knowledge with his children, or simply contemplating food, solidifying his unwavering commitment to his craft.
