Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson, known for his influential role in the culinary world, has continued to thrive in high-pressure environments since achieving the position of executive chef at New York City’s Aquavit at just 24. His remarkable talent earned him the prestigious distinction of being the youngest chef to receive a three-star review from the New York Times.
In the years that followed, Samuelsson established himself as a prominent restaurateur in New York, launching popular establishments such as Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. In addition to his restaurant ventures, he has authored cookbooks and appears frequently on the Food Network.
Now, Samuelsson is venturing into the home goods market with a new 32-piece collection in partnership with West Elm. The collection draws inspiration from his Scandinavian and Ethiopian heritage, as well as his experiences living in New York City.
In a recent interview with Quartz, Samuelsson reflected on the evolving dining landscape in 2024, discussing how people’s relationships with eating out have changed since the pandemic. He observed that the rise of home cooking during the lockdowns has led diners to seek out unique experiences when they go out, prioritizing service and the overall atmosphere.
On the ambiance of his restaurant Red Rooster, Samuelsson emphasized the importance of community and the role of live music in enriching the dining experience. He expressed pride in supporting local musicians and integrating the essence of Harlem into the restaurant.
Samuelsson also discussed his motivations for launching the home goods collection. He highlighted his lifelong passion for creativity, which includes painting and writing alongside his culinary career. His collaboration with West Elm has allowed him to merge his artistic sensibilities with practical design, inspired by both his father’s fishing village in Sweden and elements from Africa.
