Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson is known for his high-pressure career, having become the executive chef at New York City’s Aquavit by the age of 24. He was also the youngest recipient of a three-star review from the New York Times shortly thereafter. Over the years, he has established himself as one of New York’s top restaurateurs with the opening of popular restaurants like Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. In addition to his culinary ventures, Samuelsson has authored cookbooks and memoirs and has been a fixture on the Food Network.

Now, Samuelsson is diversifying into the home goods industry. He is collaborating with West Elm to launch a 32-piece collection inspired by his Scandinavian and Ethiopian heritage along with influences from his life in New York City.

In a recent interview with Quartz, Samuelsson addressed how the dining experience has evolved post-COVID-19. He noted that people have become better home cooks due to improved takeout options, leading them to seek out extraordinary dining experiences that offer great service and a vibrant atmosphere. Samuelsson emphasized the importance of a communal feel in dining, where patrons feel connected not only to their companions but also to the environment around them.

He also highlighted the significance of live music at his restaurant Red Rooster in Harlem, emphasizing the community aspect and the pride he feels in supporting local musicians. Samuelsson believes in contributing positively to the neighborhoods his restaurants inhabit, stating that research is crucial before entering a community.

When discussing his new home goods line with West Elm, Samuelsson expressed that his creativity extends beyond cooking, as he has also been involved in painting and writing throughout his life. He appreciated the collaborative process with West Elm, which allowed him to blend elements from his father’s fishing village in Sweden with prints inspired by Africa into one cohesive collection.

Ultimately, after a long day filled with various creative pursuits, Samuelsson finds solace in cooking, where he feels most confident and established. He views cooking as a constant passion, while he continues to explore other creative avenues like writing, painting, and design.
