Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has built a remarkable career marked by high-pressure success. By the age of 24, he had already achieved the prestigious position of executive chef at Aquavit in New York City, becoming the youngest recipient of a three-star review from the New York Times shortly after.
Over the years, Samuelsson has established himself as a significant figure in the New York dining scene, founding popular restaurants like Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. Additionally, he has authored cookbooks, penned memoirs, and has been a familiar face on the Food Network.
Now, Samuelsson is venturing into a new area by collaborating with West Elm to launch a 32-piece home goods collection. This line draws inspiration from his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage, mixed with elements of his New York lifestyle.
In an interview with Quartz, Samuelsson reflected on the post-pandemic dining landscape, noting that many people developed their culinary skills during lockdown, which heightened their expectations for dining out. He emphasized that patrons now seek not just meals but unique experiences, expecting exceptional service and a sense of community in restaurants.
Discussing the atmosphere at Red Rooster, Samuelsson highlighted the importance of incorporating the vibrant Harlem community into the dining experience, which includes live music and supporting local musicians. He acknowledged that understanding the local culture is crucial when setting up a restaurant in a new neighborhood.
Samuelsson also shared his inspiration behind the home goods collection, expressing that his creative pursuits extend beyond cooking to include painting and writing. He has always collaborated closely with architects in his restaurant designs and found working with West Elm to be particularly fulfilling due to their openness to his ideas.
He revealed his pride in the collection, noting that many elements are inspired by his father’s fishing village in Sweden, while also incorporating prints from Africa, creating a unique fusion in the collection.
Finally, despite his multiple creative ventures, Samuelsson reiterated that cooking remains his true passion and primary focus, stating that it is the one area where he feels completely confident and accomplished.
