Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has built a remarkable career under pressure, achieving the role of executive chef at New York City’s Aquavit by the age of 24. He became the youngest chef to earn a three-star review from the New York Times shortly after. Over the years, he has established himself as a leading restaurateur in New York, launching several notable restaurants including Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. Samuelsson has also authored cookbooks and memoirs, and has been a familiar face on the Food Network.

In a new venture, he is collaborating with West Elm to introduce a 32-piece home goods collection, drawing design inspiration from his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage as well as his life in New York City.

In a recent interview with Quartz, Samuelsson reflected on changes in dining habits since the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted that while people have become better home cooks, they now seek enhanced dining experiences, valuing service and atmosphere when they go out. He emphasized the importance of feeling part of a community and having access to diverse culinary options.

Discussing the ambiance of his restaurant Red Rooster, located in Harlem, Samuelsson mentioned that live music plays a crucial role in creating a vibrant community atmosphere. He highlighted the importance of honoring the local community and contributing positively through initiatives, such as paying local musicians.

Samuelsson explained his decision to design a home goods collection for West Elm, noting that his creative journey as a chef has included passions for painting and writing. He described collaborating with West Elm as a rewarding experience, blending elements from his father’s fishing village in Sweden with prints inspired by Africa.

Finally, when asked about his creative outlets, Samuelsson affirmed his love for cooking above all, stating that while he sees himself as still learning in other artistic endeavors, he feels confident and clear in his direction as a chef.
