Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has established himself in the culinary world through a high-pressure career. By the age of 24, he had achieved the position of executive chef at New York City’s Aquavit and was the youngest recipient of a three-star review from the New York Times.

Over the years, Samuelsson has gained recognition as one of New York’s leading restaurateurs, opening notable establishments such as Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. He has also authored cookbooks and memoirs, making regular appearances on the Food Network.

Now, Samuelsson is venturing into a new arena by collaborating with West Elm to launch a 32-piece home goods collection that draws inspiration from his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage, as well as his experiences in New York City.

In a recent interview with Quartz, Samuelsson explored the transformations in dining out since the COVID-19 lockdowns and shared his thoughts on food culture in 2024. He noted that the pandemic has improved the home dining experience, fostering a new generation of skilled home cooks. People are now seeking higher-quality dining experiences, emphasizing the need for exceptional service and an engaging atmosphere.

He pointed out that diners now desire to feel part of a lively community and have access to more dining choices, which continue to improve.

Samuelsson also discussed the importance of atmosphere in his restaurants, particularly highlighting the vibrant ambiance at Red Rooster in Harlem, where live music plays a key role in the dining experience. He emphasized the community aspect and how his establishment celebrates Harlem’s culture while supporting local musicians.

In discussing his collaboration with West Elm, Samuelsson reflected on his creative journey. He has engaged in various artistic endeavors, including painting and writing, and noted that designing restaurants often involves collaboration with architects to reflect personal styles. He expressed pride in the West Elm partnership, as the collection beautifully marries elements from his Swedish heritage with African prints.

Finally, when asked about what he turns to at the end of a challenging day, Samuelsson mentioned his unwavering passion for cooking, describing it as a fundamental aspect of his life. He feels adept in the culinary arts, while still learning and growing in his other creative pursuits.
