Marcelino Optimistic as Villarreal Seek First Champions League Win Against Pafos

Marcelino García Toral, the coach of Villarreal CF, expressed optimism as his team prepares to face the modest Pafos FC from Cyprus in search of their first victory in the Champions League this Wednesday. Despite feeling that they have deserved a win that has thus far eluded them, he acknowledges the challenges of securing an away victory in such a prestigious competition. Marcelino emphasized that their primary obligation is to compete at the highest level.

“We have three matches without a win, so we have another opportunity ahead of us. We come with the hope of achieving that first victory, which we believe we have deserved. However, we must also earn it and be more accurate than the opponent to secure the three points,” Marcelino remarked during Tuesday’s press conference.

Understanding the difficulties ahead, the Asturian coach stated that victory won’t come easily. “We approach this game with ambition. This is the match everyone has circled on the calendar, and it’s time to demonstrate that a win is attainable,” he added.

Marcelino emphasized the importance of trying to secure a win in every match. He noted that winning away in the Champions League is challenging for any team. So, the focus needs to be on delivering a strong performance, maintaining respect for the opponent, and staying solid defensively throughout the 90 minutes. “If we manage to reach our best level and add the necessary accuracy, we will have a good chance of winning,” he explained.

The coach also highlighted the need for caution, warning that facing a lower-ranked opponent can sometimes lead to complacency. He reassured that the team is ready for the challenge, which serves as a test of maturity without the added pressure of having to win. “Our obligation is to compete to the fullest and optimize our performance because often the team that appears superior doesn’t always win,” he asserted.

Marcelino reflected on the team’s consistency and ability to compete at high levels across all competitions. They are aware that a win in this match could significantly bolster their standings, but he urged his players not to let this prospect become a source of anxiety, instead focusing on respecting the opponent and showcasing their strengths on the field.

He recalled that the team has demonstrated its capability to compete against any rival, pointing out their strong performances, particularly apart from a single half against Manchester City. He remains hopeful for a repeat of that high level of play against Pafos.

Lastly, he noted that Pafos FC is a well-organized team that consistently presses and creates vertical plays offensively. Marcelino acknowledged his familiarity with Pafos’ coach, Juan Carlos Carcedo, who he has faced numerous times, highlighting that in the end, it will be the players who determine the outcome on the pitch.
