Marc Fogel, an Oakmont native who had been imprisoned in Russia since August 2021, is on his way back to the United States, as confirmed by the Trump administration. His mother, Malphine Fogel, who is 95 years old, received a phone call from Marc while he was at the Moscow airport, announcing his release. She expressed her relief and joy, sharing her doubts about ever seeing him again.
In a statement, Fogel attributed his release to President Trump, along with U.S. representatives Guy Reschenthaler, Mike Kelly, and Chris Deluzio. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz announced that Fogel was departing Russian airspace thanks to efforts from Trump and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. Waltz described the release as a positive gesture from Russia and a hopeful sign regarding the ongoing hostilities in Ukraine.
This outcome fulfills a commitment Trump made last year during a campaign rally when he met Fogel’s mother. Her son’s prolonged detention has drawn attention, particularly with other Americans, like WNBA player Brittney Griner, also previously released from Russian custody.
Fogel’s arrest was linked to his possession of a small amount of medical marijuana intended for chronic pain management. Convicted of drug smuggling and possession, he faced a potential sentence of 14 years, but U.S. officials classified him as “wrongfully detained.” Concerns had risen regarding Fogel’s health during his imprisonment, with reports indicating he had spent considerable time in hospitals while incarcerated.
Elected officials across Pennsylvania expressed their gratitude and joy for Fogel’s return, with Reschenthaler celebrating the news as a day of gratitude for the Pennsylvanian’s reunion with his family.
This release not only marks a personal victory for Fogel and his family but also symbolizes hope for improved geopolitical relations, suggesting that negotiations may pave the way for further positive developments. As Americans reflect on Fogel’s experience, there is a shared optimism that other individuals wrongfully detained abroad may also soon return home to their loved ones.
