Aggies look to build on momentum as Manziel steps in as unofficial mentor to Marcel Reed
Johnny Manziel, still a legendary figure at Texas A&M, says he’s staying engaged with the program and has begun mentoring quarterback Marcel Reed as the Aggies head into a new season. During an appearance on Mostly Sports with Mark Titus and Brandon Walker, Manziel said he’s been watching practice film and offering pointers to Reed, while also praising head coach Mike Elko for the culture he’s building and the energy around the program.
“I’ve had a good talk with Marcel Reed this week,” Manziel said. “I’ve been studying practice film and trying to share tips that could help him. I’m excited for what Coach Elko’s bringing—the vibe, what it means to the Aggie Spirit. I expect better things this year. We’ve got some players, Elko’s done a solid job recruiting, and I’m hoping for the best.”
If Reed can channel even a portion of Manziel’s production, Texas A&M could have an exciting season. Manziel, who starred for the Aggies in 2012, finished his college career with 7,820 passing yards and 63 touchdowns, won the Heisman Trophy, and earned SEC Offensive Player of the Year honors as a consensus All-American.
Reed’s own numbers from last season offer a foundation to build on. He appeared in eight games with 11 total appearances, throwing for 1,864 yards and 15 touchdowns while also scoring seven rushing TDs and rushing for 547 yards. With Manziel lending guidance, Reed aims to grow his efficiency and leadership under a second-year system implemented by Elko.
Texas A&M went 8-5 in Elko’s debut campaign, a year that featured a strong finish but also four losses in the final five games. Elko acknowledged at SEC Media Days that year one was about laying the groundwork—culture, scheme, practice tempo and overall program design—and he emphasized the progress he expects in year two as the foundation for a more consistent contender.
What to watch this fall is whether Reed can take a meaningful step forward with Manziel’s input and how the rest of Elko’s staff can accelerate development across the roster. The Aggies have a mix of talent and veteran leadership, and the 12th Man will be vocal as Texas A&M seeks a more complete rebound this season.
Summary: Manziel’s open involvement with Reed and Elko’s evolving program signals a hopeful trajectory for Texas A&M, blending mentorship, rising quarterback development, and a strengthened culture as the Aggies push to return to their competitive form.
Additional value: If Reed leverages Manziel’s guidance and combines it with Elko’s emphasis on discipline and growth, Texas A&M could see more consistent offensive output and improved situational play. Fans should watch Reed’s decision-making under pressure and his ability to translate practice reps into game-day performance, as well as how the defense adapts to a more polished, faster-paced tempo.
