Samoa, Belgium Clash for Final 2027 Rugby World Cup Berth

Manu Samoa Face Belgium in Key Clash for 2027 Rugby World Cup Berth

As Manu Samoa prepares to face Belgium on Tuesday, November 18, they are on a mission to secure the final qualifying spot for the Rugby World Cup 2027, scheduled to take place in Australia. Captain Theodore McFarland has called for national support through prayers and encouragement as the team strives to solidify their position in this prestigious tournament.

The qualification tournament held in Dubai has seen both teams deliver outstanding performances, each achieving victories on the second day of matches. Belgium recorded a close win over Namibia and showcased their tenacity against Brazil, clinching a nail-biting 30-27 victory thanks to a late try from substitute prop Maxime Jadot. Conversely, Samoa opened their campaign with a solid win against Brazil, and then dominated Namibia, finishing their match with a score of 26-8.

This upcoming matchup carries significant importance for Samoa, who has secured a place in every Rugby World Cup since their debut in 1991. Despite encountering setbacks, including a recent defeat against Chile and the absence of several key players, the team has found renewed strength, partially inspired by a heartfelt appeal from former captain Filipo Levi, urging current players to step up in these crucial qualification matches.

In their latest game against Namibia, Samoa displayed a professional demeanor, controlling the game from the start. They entered halftime with a commanding 19-0 lead fueled by tries from scrum-half Jonathan Taumateine and wingers Va’afauese Apelu Maliko and Latrell Ah-Kiong. Full-back Jacob Umaga’s two conversions were pivotal in establishing Samoa’s dominance.

Though Namibia sought to mount a comeback in the second half and scored through a penalty goal, Samoa swiftly countered with a driving maul resulting in a try by flanker Alamanda Motuga. Despite some turnover issues, Samoa’s disciplined execution of their game plan allowed them to maintain control and secure the victory.

Head coach Lemalu Tusiata Pusi acknowledged that while there are areas to address, particularly in turnover management, there are encouraging signs of the team peaking at the right moment. The inclusion of new players such as former Australian prop Scott Sio has significantly enhanced the squad’s overall performance.

The match against Belgium is anticipated to be historic for both teams, as they compete for a place at the 2027 Rugby World Cup. With a fervent fan base rallying behind them, Samoa aims to clear this final obstacle and continue their illustrious legacy in the realm of international rugby.
